WATCH: Police investigate death of suspect in fatal police shooting in Salem

A man was shot and killed by police after a manhunt Saturday in Salem, Oregon.

The suspect, whose name has not been released, is in custody, police said.

The shooting occurred around 4:15 a.m. local time (1115 GMT), according to the Portland Police Bureau.

The man was identified as 35-year-old Nicholas L. DeSantis.

He is expected to survive.

Oregon Gov.

Ted Wheeler tweeted that the incident was “an appalling loss of life,” but the investigation is ongoing.

DeSantis is charged with murder in the death of 33-year old Daniel Bowers in November, according to Oregon State Police.

Bowers was an accountant for the Oregon state prison system, where DeSants brother, David, is serving time for manslaughter.

Oregon State Police said DeSantis was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt when he fired a single shot from a handgun at officers during a chase in an area of Portland called the “Bridges Creek Road” area.

De Santis is being held on $2 million bond.

Police are seeking information about anyone who may have seen the shooting or seen the suspect at the scene.

Police did not immediately identify a motive for the shooting, but said the suspect is believed to have acted alone.
